ourvillages 2003-2005

The first series of pilotprojects started with ourvillages in 2003, with the artists Kathrin Böhm (Höfen), Wapke Feenstra (Wjelsryp)and Antje Schiffers (Heiligendorf) going back to their village of origin in order to initiate a village-specific art project. The project is ongoing. From 2004 Doris Koch (Niederstotzingen) connected to the ourvillages project.

"How could our current practice be applied or contribute to the life in our villages today?"

All artists involved are closely linked to the places and people they will go back to and present their work to. Thus the social and communicational conventions of smaller rural communities are implemented on them and their work, as they are still considered members of these communities (with all the supporting and restricting aspects). The nature of their art-practice is to work in exchange and cooperation with their varying audiences within the public sphere.

Antje Schiffers has started a project for her village Heiligendorf in 2001, called "I like being a farmer and would like to stay one" where she asks various farmers to make a video about themselves in return for a painting she did of their farms. The videos and paintings were shown in public in Heiligendorf as part of the village's 850 anniversary celebration on May 17th and 18th 2003.

Höfer Waren (Höfer Goods)
A collaborative project between Höfen’s women, artist Kathrin Böhm and product designer Angelika Seeschaf.

Höfer Goods is a ten year art project and will be launched as part of the Village Fete in Höfen on the first weekend of October 2006. The project was initiated by the artist Kathrin Böhm (who is from Höfen) in 2004, as a collaboration with the women from Höfen and the London based product designer Angelika Seeschaf.

Höfer Goods is a new product series which is rooted in stories, materials and skills that are particular to the village. Villages have always been a place of intensive production, from agriculture to meat and dairy production, gardening, fruit and vegetable processing etc. Today the meaning of agriculture and associated products have declined dramatically, but the village remains a rich resource for numerous materials, craft and labour skills and creative thinking.
