Portret of Kathrin
Kathrin is a founding member and partner of the London based artist/architect collective public works, and she's also a founding member of myvillages.org.
She grew up in Höfen, a village of 200 residents in Upper Frankonia, Southern Germany.

In 2004 she started, together with the "Höfer Frauen" (an informal group of around 30 women from the village), "Höfer Goods".

"Höfer Goods" derive from stories, skills, materials and ambitions amongst the group, and are launched annually during the village fete on the first weekend in October.
A product designer from outside the village collaborates with the group on shaping ideas and developing new produce. Angelika Seeschaaf from eeaa Design has been involved in 2006 and 2008.
"Höfer Waren" is ongoing.
Clay and Food - ongoing

I ve been talking to Christine Bernhard, an artist friend and colleague, a few times since October.
She has done extensive proper experimental work to do with food growing, processing and eating, and it would be nice if she could get involved in the Höfer Waren 2010 ideas. Today we spoke about different "societies" amongst the plants, and there are "Ackerunkrautgesellschaften" (field-weed-society) which grow on clay rich ground. So instead of wrapping the fruit that grows on trees which stand on this ground, it might be an idea to do something with the weed growing on clay. I m going to talk to Herrn Back who came to the clay workshop in May, to see what he knows about the relationship between weed, clay and making pots....

Höfer Waren 2010: (work)SHOP(table) during the village fete
28 September 2010

After lots of talking and consulatation, I'm happy to announce the event for this year's village fete: Höfer Waren 2010/ fruit and clay, a workshop table and exhibition on Sunday 3rd October from 14.00 to 17.00 at the Community Hall (outside if it's nice weather).

The plan is ready: instead of a trading table we'll be having a making and swapping table.
There were a few conversations in the village about what to do, and that a sales table wouldn't probably be so appreciated. So we will be having a long table in the yard of the village hall - wrapping local fruit in very local clay. This all connects to a workshop earlier this year in the village that dealt with a local history of using clay, and was part of a workshop organised by Kathrin as part of what public works contributes to the RHYZOM project.

The idea was that the Rhyzom workshop on local clay production would inform the new products for 2010. The ideas that stuck most with me were the close relationship between soil and food (clay and cherries), the concept of Hausfrauentechnik, and the idea to bring things from the village to the capital. It's now early September, I've just moved back to the village for a good 10 months, and I need to make a quick plan on how to follow this all up. In short: I would like to run some experimental clay kitchen sessions this months, have a public
food/clay session during the village fete, and then link the Höfen Waren 2010 to the VORRATSKAMMER project in Berlin. Let's see.

Living in the village

A strong motivation for myvillages.org was the desire to think about the places - the villages - where we come from, and what relation they have to what we do as artists in Berlin, Rotterdam and London.
I've just moved back for a good few months, and I'll be posting news and gossip on a "What's going on in Höfen" blog .
I am back in Höfen right now for many different reasons, and myvillages.org is one. Apologies in advance for mixing up the professional and private, the village and the city, bull and oxen, etc.
